A native of McCook, Neb., U.S. Senator Ben Nelson received his law degree from the University of Nebraska in 1970. After enjoying a successful career in insurance law and serving as director of the Nebraska Department of Insurance, Nelson was governor of Nebraska from 1991 to 1999. Nelson has been a U.S. senator from 2000 through 2012. He is retiring from the Senate at the end of the current term.
