‘Green’ or ‘greenwashed’ in real estate
Just as there has been an influx of greenwashing in all products and services, the real estate field is no exception. A well-trained “Green” real estate agent can serve as another resource to raise the bottom line for commercial buildings. And these agents are there to assist buyers, sellers and builders.
Since 2002, EcoBroker has been the leader in “Green” classes and certification for any and all real estate agents. Agents certified in this program need not be a realtor nor abide by the National Association of Realtors rules and regulations, but they have taken and passed a rigorous series of classes. EcoBroker is a “Built Green” educational partner. You can learn more at their Web site, http://www.EcoBroker.com.
In 2008, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) initiated their GREEN Certification program through their Green Resource Council.
The founding members of the NAR “GREEN Certified” program had to physically attend the classes, but the courses are now available online to realtors only. In addition to the classes, a GREEN-certified realtor must abide by the rules and ethics of the NAR. They are education partners with the National Association of Home Builders. You can learn more at their Web site, http://www.greenresourcecouncil.org.
With the proliferation of agents stating they specialize or are experts in green or energy-saving properties, or who state they are “Certified Green by…”, you should check your agent’s credentials, just as you would with any other company or professional.
